BBC pays Google to top search lists and SEO

15 Sep 2009

The BBC has been paying US internet search engine Google for the right to use key words and phrases that put it on top of results lists.

It said it finances the deals by using part of its £100m marketing spend.

The BBC paid Google so that people looking up details of the Mercury Prize, for instance, would be directed to a BBC website.

The winner of this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which was announced last week and broadcast on the BBC, was Speech Debelle for her album Speech Therapy.

'Promoting content like the Mercury Prize online is an effective way to inform the licence fee payers who will want to watch it or read about it,' the Corporation said. 'The BBC has an annual budget for marketing and value for money is at the heart of how decisions are made about spending it.'

The BBC declined to say how long it had been using its marketing budget to pay Google to boost its presence online.

The tactic is likely to cause consternation among the BBC's critics who fear the Corporation's guaranteed £3.5bn-a-year licence fee income has given it too much power at a time when commercial rivals are suffering.

James Murdoch, chairman of News International which owns The Times and its Sunday sister and has a leading stake in satellite broadcaster BSkyB, recently described the BBC's influence in broadcasting as 'chilling'.
